Ads inside AI answers.

AI assistants have become a place where people research what to buy, and advertising has followed them there. ChatGPT now carries ads, and Google shows ads alongside its AI search answers. For a business, the question is not whether this exists but whether it changes how you should be found.

What OpenAI launched

OpenAI announced on 16 January 2026 that it would test ads in ChatGPT for logged-in adults in the US on its Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscriptions do not carry ads. Ads appear at the bottom of an answer when a sponsored product or service is relevant to the conversation, labelled and kept separate from the answer itself. During the test, OpenAI said, ads would not be shown to accounts believed to belong to under-18s or near sensitive topics such as health, mental health or politics.

Since then the programme has grown. In September 2026 OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents, which let someone who clicks an ad continue the conversation with an agent run for that business. On 21 October 2026 it announced that ChatGPT Ads had expanded to 26 more countries and that over 100,000 advertisers had used the platform.

What Google is doing

Google's ads can appear above or below AI Overviews in more than 200 markets, according to Google, and it is testing ads in AI Mode, its conversational search. They run from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns rather than a separate product.

03

What the ads are not supposed to change

OpenAI's stated principles are that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, that conversations are kept private from advertisers, and that user data is never sold to them. These are the company's own commitments rather than something an outsider can verify, but they matter for planning: if they hold, being recommended in the answer is still earned through what your website says, not bought.

That means the organic work does not go away. Pages that explain clearly what you offer, for whom and on what terms remain what an assistant draws on when it writes the answer above the ad.

04

Should you advertise there?

It is worth a test if most of these are true.

  • People research your kind of product or service by asking detailed questions, not by searching a brand name
  • You can measure what happens after the click — an inquiry, a sale, a booking
  • Your landing pages answer the question the ad appeared under, rather than sending people to a generic home page
  • You can afford a small, time-boxed experiment and judge it on results, not impressions

05

What to do either way

Keep your product and service information accurate, specific and crawlable, keep shopping feeds current if you sell online, and track visits from AI assistants separately in your analytics. Advertising can buy a place under the answer; only the website can earn a place in it.
