Is SEO dead in 2026?
No. But search has changed in a way that matters to a business website: more questions are now answered on the results page itself, and fewer of those searches end in a visit. The useful question is no longer whether SEO works, but which parts of it still do the work.

What the research shows
Two studies are worth knowing because of how they were done. In July 2025, Pew Research Center tracked the real browsing of 900 US adults. When a Google results page showed an AI summary, people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits; without one, they did so on 15%. Links inside the summary itself were clicked on just 1% of visits.
In 2026, researchers at the Indian School of Business and Carnegie Mellon ran a randomised experiment with 1,065 Chrome users, hiding AI Overviews for some of them. When an overview appeared, outbound organic clicks fell by roughly 40% — almost entirely when it sat at the top of the page. People who could not see overviews reported no difference in satisfaction. The paper is a working paper, not yet peer-reviewed, but the direction matches every other serious measurement.

What Google says to do about it
Google's own guidance is unusually direct. Its optimisation guide for AI search features says you do not need new machine-readable files, special structured data, content split into small chunks, or writing aimed at AI. What it asks for instead is content that offers value beyond common knowledge, on a site with sound technical foundations.
The requirement to appear as a linked source in AI Overviews or AI Mode is the same as for ordinary results: the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. There are no additional technical requirements.
03
What has actually changed
Pages that only restate what everyone already knows are the most exposed, because a summary can restate it too. A definition, a generic checklist or a list of tips copied from the first five results gives a reader no reason to click. Pages carrying something only you can say — how you price, what your process actually involves, the specifics of your product or location — are much harder to summarise away.
The click is also no longer the only outcome that counts. A page can shape an answer, put your name in front of a buyer, and be visited later through a branded search that never shows up as an organic click on the original query.
04
What still works
Almost everything that made a site findable before still applies, and some of it matters more.
- Pages that can be crawled and indexed: no stray noindex, no blocked resources, a current sitemap
- The answer first: the opening lines of a page answer its question completely
- Specific, first-hand information competitors cannot copy from each other
- Structured data that matches what the page visibly says
- An up-to-date Google Business Profile and, for shops, Merchant Center feed
- Search Console set up, so technical problems are seen before they cost traffic
05
What to measure now
If clicks on informational queries fall while impressions hold steady, that is the AI-summary effect, not necessarily a ranking loss. Watch impressions and clicks separately in Search Console, track branded searches, and judge the site by inquiries and sales rather than sessions alone. Visits referred by AI assistants are worth tracking too, though some arrive without a referrer, so treat the count as a minimum.
06
So, is it dead?
The part of SEO that produced traffic from generic, easily answered questions is shrinking. The part that makes a site technically sound, clearly structured and worth citing is not — it is now what decides whether you appear in the answer at all.
